Our need for support
• Up to two million people in the UK have a serious sight problem.
• 800 people lose their sight every week.
• One in six people over the age of 75 is blind or partially sighted.
• 90% of blind people over 60 have an income of less than half the
national average.
• 75% of visually impaired people of working age are unemployed.
The majority of blind or partially sighted people have limited opportunities for work and have to manage on low incomes. Normally they rely on welfare benefits as their main source of income. Yet they have many extra expenses to cope with and many of them need to buy special equipment and living aids.
Poverty for blind and visually impaired people remains all too common. The trend towards smaller families and households has resulted in more people living alone, so that isolation is also a frequent factor, particularly in the everyday lives of our older clients.
The Royal Blind Society was founded to help some of those who face particular hardship because of their very low incomes.
To maintain our present level of grants to visually impaired people on low incomes, we need to raise at least £15,000 a month.
To achieve this, we need your support. Please make a donation towards our work, or complete one of our donation forms , or try taking part in one of our events.
